Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon and officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, is an island country in South Asia. It lies in the Indian Ocean, southwest of the Bay of Bengal, separated from the Indian peninsula by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait. This is an island of magical proportions, once known as Serendib, Taprobane, the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, and Ceylon. Sri Lanka is famous for producing finest tea, rubber and coconut, as well as exotic spices.Sri Lanka is densely populated. The majority of its people are poor, live in rural areas, and depend on agriculture for their livelihood. A physical environment of wide-ranging diversity makes Sri Lanka one of the world’s most scenic countries. As the home of several ethnic groups, each with its own cultural heritage, Sri Lanka also has a highly varied cultural landscape.

Paid leave in Sri Lanka is outlined in the employment contract as a minimum of 14 days paid leave a year following completion of 1-year service, in addition to public holidays. Within the first 12 months, leave entitlement starts at 4 days after the probation period and accumulates every quarter. Carryover over unused leave is per company policy.

The employee is permitted to 14 days of annual leave complete with the full salary for each concluded year of service. Hence, employees are not entitled to annual leave on the first year of employment. Annual leave for the second year of employment is accrued based on the date the employee joined service.

In all cases, sick leave applications must be supported by a medical certificate issued by a registered medical practitioner. In general, an employee who has completed a year of continuous service in the public or private sector is entitled to 100% paid sick leave of no more than seven days per year.

Employers are required to pay a half month’s salary for each year of completion if the employee’s service exceeds 5 years at the time of retirement, resignation, or dismissal.

Sri Lanka currently does not have any mandates about paid paternity leave, so you could provide a few days as an incentive for employees to sign on with your company. Other common supplemental benefits include performance-based bonuses, private health care plans, and additional paid time off.
